Urban Graffiti at Road to California

If you are going to Road to California this weekend, I hope you have a chance to see the Quilts on the Wall Exhibit, " Urban Graffiti", and the Beyond the Edge exhibit "Infinite Connections. I have art quilts in both of these exhibits. Here is a photo of my "The Krew" piece in Urban Graffiti.

Julia's Bonsai - Some Details...

I thought I'd show some details of the bonsai fiber art piece that I made at the end of 2015.

As I mentioned previously the bonsai image was printed on fabric. The fabric printed image is shown here.

I added borders to this image first. The white border is ultrasuede, and blue border is a denim tone-on-tone fabric.

I then sandwiched the top and did quilting stitches on it. Here is a detail showing of some of the quilting stitches I used.

I also did some thread painting  to enhance the foliage on the bonsai tree. Here is a photo of the thread painting.

I used small zigzag stitches for the thread painting on the foliage. It helped to fill the area faster, and I like the appearance of those stitches better.

After the quilting was done I sewed a binding on the fiber art piece. I used a single layer of the denim fabric for the binding and hand stitched it down.

Thanks for visiting my blog!

Julia's Bonsai

Happy 2016 to All of You!

I thought I would start the new year off by showing you a little fiber art piece that I completed near the end of 2015. It is a small art quilt mounted on a canvas. The art quilt is another bonsai tree, and it is based on a painting of a bonsai that I did a few years ago. I went through a bonsai phase with my watercolors and fiber arts, and apparently haven't gotten it completely out of my system yet. I think this is number 5 in the series!

So, I had a small bonsai painting that I liked and I got it printed on fabric at Spoonflower (on-line company that prints images on fabric). I chose to have several small sizes printed thinking I might make small art pieces and sell them. I still might do that, but this piece was a gift for my friend Julia.

The first step was making the small art quilt. Then I painted the canvas and adhered the quilt to it. Next came finishing the back of the canvas.

I'll show some details of this fiber art piece in upcoming posts. But for now, I wish you a Happy 2016 and as always, I thank you for visiting my blog!
